New York City is one of the most visited cities on earth, yet finding a clean public restroom can feel like an impossible mission. The good news: once you know where to look, the city is surprisingly well-equipped.

NYC Parks Department Restrooms

The NYC Parks Department operates over 900 comfort stations across the five boroughs. Most are open from 8 AM to 9 PM during warmer months and shorter hours in winter. Central Park alone has more than 20 restroom locations, with concentrations near major playgrounds and tourist spots like Bethesda Fountain and the Great Lawn.

Public Libraries

All three library systems — New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Public Library — allow anyone to use restrooms during open hours. With over 90 branches across the boroughs, a library is rarely more than a few blocks away in any dense neighborhood.

Subway Station Restrooms

The MTA has been steadily reopening restrooms in major subway stations. Penn Station, Grand Central–42nd St, Times Square–42nd St, and all major terminal stations have public facilities. Check the MTA website for the current open list, as hours and availability shift.

Chain Restaurants & Coffee Shops

McDonald's, Starbucks, Dunkin', and most major chains offer restrooms to customers — and sometimes to the public without purchase. In Midtown, these are often your fastest option when parks are not nearby.

Department Stores

Macy's Herald Square, Bloomingdale's, Target and similar large retailers all have public-accessible restrooms on upper floors. These tend to be clean and well-maintained.

Museums and Cultural Institutions

The Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, the American Museum of Natural History and most public museums allow restroom access even if you are not paying admission. Just walk in confidently and head for the facilities.

Neighborhoods to Know

  • Midtown Manhattan: Bryant Park has excellent, well-maintained facilities. The park is open daily.
  • Lower Manhattan: Battery Park and the Staten Island Ferry terminal both have restrooms.
  • Brooklyn: Prospect Park comfort stations are well-kept and distributed throughout the park.
  • Queens: Flushing Meadows–Corona Park has multiple restroom buildings.
